A concrete mixer comprises a rotatable drum 11 spanned by a bridge (not shown) supporting at least one stirrer assembly comprising a shaft 13 rotatable about an axis parallel to and spaced apart from the axis of rotation of the drum and carrying a support 21 provided with holders 17, and spring-loaded fingers 16 rotatably mounted in the holders, each finger being provided with a pair of blades 14, 15 one of which is located at a different height to the other, the arrangement being such that if a lower blade 14 encounters an obstacle, the finger to which it is secured pivots in its holder to surmount the obstacle.
