Abstract

1,222,942. Ammonium sulphate recovery. STAMICARBON N.V. 6 Feb., 1969 [8 Feb., 1968], No. 6519/69. Heading C1A. Ammonium sulphate is recovered from aqueous solutions thereof containing organic contaminants and obtained from the preparation of (a) acrylonitrile from propylene; (b) methyl methacrylate from acetone cyanohydrin; or (c) methyl acrylate from acrylonitrile by contacting the contaminated solution in a concentration which is substantially saturated with dioxan, dimethyl formamide, acetonitrile and/or a lactam (e.g. caprolactam) whereby the organic contaminants are concentrated in the organic phase, and recovering the ammonium sulphate from the other phase. The organic extractants are water soluble and may be used in the form of an aqueous solution; the ammonium sulphate may be crystallized in the presence of said extractants. Before extraction the contaminated ammonium sulphate solution may be mixed with one or more ammonium sulphate solutions obtained in the preparation of caprolactam, the latter solutions containing some caprolactam and so reducing the amount of caprolactam which must be added in the extraction.
