Abstract
The cathode effluent from the electrohydrodimerization of acrylonitrile to adiponitrile is treated with acrylonitrile and/or water (or a recycled aqueous phase) to provide an acrylonitrile phase and an aqueous phase, the acrylonitrile phase is extracted in countercurrent multistage fashion with water (or a recycled aqueous phase), and the aqueous phase is extracted in countercurrent multistage fashion with acrylonitrile; the aqueous extract phase contains the quaternary ammonium salts present in the cathode effluent, and the acrylonitrile phase contains the adiponitrile product. Various preferred procedures involving recycle of the various phases are described.
