Alkaline earth metal sulphonates are prepared from sulphonic acids having a chain which has a branch at most every two carbon atoms by neutralizing an oil solution of the purified sulphonic acid with an alkaline earth metal oxide or hydroxide in the presence of an alkaline earth metal nitrate, and in the presence of water and/or a C 1 to C 5 aliphatic alcohol.
