Abstract
1,222,696. Temperature responsive actuating element. A. L. BAYLISS and K. L. BAYLISS. June 17, 1969 [June 22, 1968], No.29888/68. Heading G1D. A temperature responsive actuator comprises a tubular housing 5, a sleeve 8, having two axially extending straight slots 10, secured within the housing 5 by scans 9, a cylindrical barrel 11 rotatable within the sleeve 8 and having two helical slots 13 therein, and a piston 16 slidable axially within the barrel 11 and having two radial pins 17 which pass through the slots 13 and engage the slots 10, the piston 16 being movable against the action of a spring 15 by a plunger 18 actuated by thermal expansion of a cartridge of wax or other expansible material in a cylinder 19, the movement of the piston imparting rotary movement to the barrel 11 and hence to an arm 12 secured thereto, the arm being used to operate a ventilator or the like (not shown). The pitch of the helical slots 13 need not be uniform along their length, and in alternative constructions, the helical slots could be formed in the sleeve and the straight slots in the barrel, or the sleeve could be omitted and effectively replaced by grooves formed in the wall of the housing 5.
