Cutting-edges, shaping and treating.-In a machine for grinding the blades of safety razors, in which the blade holder is arranged between a pair of backwardly and forwardly turned grinding- rollers and is oscillated so that both sides of the two edges are ground, the rollers 7, 8, Fig. 1, are turned by the segment 11 engaging the gears 5, 6. The blade is placed between two cheeks 24, Fig. 5, and is slipped with them into a slotted cylinder 22 having a gear 10 on its axis adapted to engage with a toothed segment on a pivoted piece 13. The piece 13 is slotted to embrace a pin 17 on a lever 16, the end of which is engaged by a cam 19 on the boss of the segment 11. When the segment is turned by the handle D, the lever 16 is pushed to one side by the cam 19 and rocks the piece 13 to cause two edges of the blade to bear against the rollers. When the direction is reversed, the lever 16 is turned in the other direction, and the blade is moved to bring the other two edges into engagement. The lower end of the lever 16 may be provided with curved surfaces meeting in a point to engage the surface of the cam 19 and lock the blade holder in position during the grinding. The cam may be formed on the inner surface of the toothed segment 11 and the lever 16 be formed with surfaces adapted to coact with it. The lever 16 may be applied directly to the axis of the blade-holder. To prevent the segment being reversed before the grinding stroke is completed, the shaft 12 is provided with a loose arm 47, Fig. 9, and a fast arm 48. The loose arm carries a pawl 39 having a pin 51 engaging a slot in the arm 48. The pawl trails over a curved piece 38 and cannot be reversed until it has escaped over the end of the piece. The piece 38, Fig. 12, may be mounted upon the nave of the segment 11 and co-operate with a pawl 39 controlled by a spring 41<a>. The handle D may comprise two tong-like pieces pivoted on a part depending from the axis 12 and adapted to grasp a plate on that axis or the extended axis itself.
