Abstract

1,222,686. Softening textiles. PROCTER & GAMBLE CO. 5 June, 1968 ,[5 June, 1967 (2)], No. 26712/68. Heading DIP. [Also in Division C5] A detergent composition with textile softening properties comprises by weight of the total composition:-(a) from 1% to 20% of a water soluble anionic, nonionic, ampholytic or zwilterionic synthetic detergent having in its molecular structure one hydrophobic radical from 8-18 carbon atoms (b) from 0-90% of a water soluble alkaline builder salt, (c) from 1-25% of a textile softening agent which is (i) a zwilterionic compound of general formula: in which R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> which may be the same or different are each methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, 2-hydroxy-ethyl or 2-hydroxypropyl, R<SP>3</SP> is straight or branched C 20-30 alkyl or C 20-30 alkenyl chain which may be substituted with 1 or 2 hydroxyl groups and which may be interrupted by 1 to 5 ether linkages and 1 amide linkage and R is an alkylene radical or monohydroxy-alkylene radical of from 1-4 carbon atoms; or (ii) a tertiary amine oxide of formula:- in which R<SP>4</SP> is straight or branched chain C 20-30 alkyl or alkenyl which may be interrupted by 1-5 ether linkages or 1 amide linkage and which may carry 1 or 2 hydroxyl substituents and 1 or 2 chloro substituents, R<SP>6</SP> is methyl, ethyl, n-propyl, isopropyl, 2-hydroxyethyl or 2-hydroxy propyl, R<SP>5</SP> is an alkyl radical of from 1 to 20 carbon atoms which may be interrupted by from 1 to 5 ether linkages and 1 amide linkage and which may carry from 1 to 2 hydroxyl substituents and from 1 to 2 chloro substituents or R<SP>5</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> together with the nitrogen atom may form a heterocyclic radical of from 4 to 6 carbon atoms which may contain oxygen as a second hetero atom (III) a tertiary phosphine oxide of the general formula:- in which R<SP>7</SP> is an alkyl, alkenyl or monohydroxyalkyl radical of from 20 to 30 carbon atoms and R<SP>8</SP> and R<SP>9</SP> which may be the same or different are each alkyl or monohydroxy alkyl groups of from 1 to 4 carbon atoms (IV) sulphated ethoxylated alcohol compounds of the general formula: in which R<SP>10</SP> is a C 21-30 alkyl radical M is an alkali metal ammonium or substituted ammonium and y is an integer of from 1 to 20, (V) anionic sulphonate compounds of the general formula: in which R 11 is a C 20-30 alkyl radical and M has the same meaning as above (VI) a mixture of two or more of (I) to (V) and (d) water. Anionic synthetic detergents mentioned are sodium alkyl sulphates; sodium or potassium alkylbenzenesulphonates, the alkyl group containing 9 to 15 carbon atoms; sodium alkylglyceryl ether sulphonates; sodium coconut oil fatty acid monoglyceride sulphates and sulphonates; sodium or potassium salts of sulphuric acid esters of the reaction product of one mole of a higher fatty alcohol and from 1 to 6 moles of ethylene oxide, sodium or potassium salts of alkylphenol ethylene. oxide ether sulphates with 1 to 10 units of ethylene oxide per molecule and in which the alkyl radicals contain 9 to 12 carbon atoms; the reaction product of fatty acids esterified with isothionic acid and neutralised with sodium hydroxide, or sodium or potassuim salts of fatty acid amines of a methyltauride. Nonionic synthetic detergent mentioned are condensation products of ethylene oxide and a hydrophobic base formed by the condensation of propylene oxide with propylene glycol; polyethylene oxide condensates of alkylphenols; condensation products of ethylene oxide and the product resulting from the reaction of propylene oxide and ethylenediamine, condensation product of aliphatic alcohols having from 8 to 18 carbon atoms with ethylene oxide; long chain tertiary amine oxides of formula RR'R"N->0 in which R is an alkyl radical of from 8 to 18 carbon atoms, and R' and R" are each methyl or ethyl radicals; long chain tertiary phosphine oxides of formula RR'R"P->0 in which R is an alkyl, alkenyl or monohydroxyalkyl radical from 10 to 18 carbon atoms and R' and R" are each alkyl or monohydroxyalkyl groups containing 1 to 3 carbon atoms. Ampholytic synthetic detergents mentioned are derivatives of aliphatic amines which contain long chains of from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and an anionic water solubilizing group zwelterionic synthetic detergents include derivatives of aliphatic quaternary ammonium compounds, in which the aliphatic radical may be straight chain or branched and wherein one of the aliphatic substituents contains from 8 to 18 carbon atoms and one contains an anionic watersolubilizing group. Water-soluble inorganic alkaline builder salts may be alkali metal or ammonium or substituted ammonium carbonates borates, phosphates, polyphosphates, bicarbonates and silicates. Organic alkaline sequestrant builder salts which may be used are alkali metal, ammonium or substituted ammonium aminopolycarboxylates. Water soluble salts of ethane-1-hydroxy-11-diphosphonate, water soluble salts of methylene diphosphonic acid, substituted or not, water soluble salts of polycarboxylite polymers and copolymers. Optionally the compositions may contain brightening agent from 0.01% to 1.0% by weight of the total composition. these include cotton brighteners of the bis-triazinyl stilbene type, the bis-N-acylstilbene type; the stilbenetriazole type and the dibenzothiophenedioxide type. Other brighteners mentioned are the bisazoles, monozoles; pyrazolines; and coumarins. The detergent softener compositions may also contain other compatible softening agents such as ester-, ether-, or amide like condensation products containing polyalcohol, polyglycol, polyglycerol radicals and other suitable higher molecular, preferably long chain aliphatic, radicals with 12 to 18 carbon atoms or sulphated or sulphonated long chain aliphatic alcohols. Condensation products of long chain fatty acids with hydroxy- or amino sulphonic acid; as well as additives such as diluents, e.g. sodium sulphate; tarnish inhibitors, bactericides, anti-redeposition agents e.g. sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, sud boosters, colours and perfumes. The compositions of the invention may be in granular, flake, liquid and tablet forms. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 1,222,687.
