Abstract

1,222,361. Vehicle headlamps. B. C. J. WARNES, E. R. COURAGE, and R. H. COURAGE. 12 Feb., 1968 [16 Feb., 1967], No. 7540/67. Heading F4R. A vehicle headlamp consists of a reflector 14, a light source 11 and a mirror 12, so arranged that all the light from the source falls on the mirror to produce a main beam of substantially parallel light and a secondary beam which is directed downwards. The reflector 14 may be parabolic with the filament arranged with one end coincident with the focus. The mirror 12 may be planar at the lower end and curved over at the upper end so as to ensure that no light reaching it is directed, above the main beam. The light source may be a quartz-iodine lamp or the reflector 14 may comprise a sealedbeam unit. A transparent window with or without a yellow or orange filter may be arranged in front of the system. The reflector 14 may be parabolic in one plane only, and the mirror 12 may be curved transversely to alter the spread of the downward beam. The reflector 14 may be hinged at its vertex and the beam pattern adjusted by opening the two halves of the parabola. The part M of the mirror 12 or the part R of the reflector 14 may be removed or blacked out to avoid multiple reflections. Means may be provided for tilting the mirror to produce a dipped beam or the mirror may be mounted to move downwards in response to an uneven road surface, being returned by a damped spring. The inclination of the mirror may be such as to produce polarized light. A small window may be provided in the casing of the system or an additional lamp provided on the offside front corner of the vehicle to light up the road around the vehicle. Additional heating filaments may be mounted within the reflector 14 and may be so energized that the heating increases with engine speed.
