Lubricants comprise a mineral or synthetic lubricating oil base, 0À05-10 wt. per cent of dioctadecyl or dioleyl phosphonate and 0À05-10 wt. per cent of an organic sulphur containing compound. A sulphurized mineral oil can be used as both the lubricating base and as the sulphur compound: other suitable sulphur compounds are sulphurized sperm oil, lard oil and palm oil; and polysulphides of ethylene, propylene, butylene and amylene, e.g. sulphurized isobutylene containing 30-65 wt. per cent sulphur, t-butyl trisulphide and di tbutyl disulphide. Suitable synthetic lubricating bases are long chain alkanes, olefin polymers, esters of polyhydric alcohols and monocarboxylic acids, esters of monohydric alcohols and dicarboxylic acids, polyglycol ethers, polyphenyl ethers and polysiloxane fluids.
