Abstract

[Also in Division G1] In apparatus for determining the distance between the nozzle of a gas working tool and a workpiece, the nozzle is fitted to a body 1 (Fig. 2) having a chamber 2 fed with pressurized fluid via inlets 3, 4 for ejection on to a workpiece 8 via jet 7, and the back pressure is fed via port 10 to a transducer (Fig. 3) comprising a diaphragm 12 mechanically linked to a strain gauge resistor 13. Another strain gauge resistor 16 is similarly controlled by diaphragm 15 subjected to atmospheric pressure, and the difference between the two resistances is determined in a bridge circuit whose output is indicative of the back pressure and therefore a function of the distance between the nozzle and the surface of the workpiece.
