In cooling a laminated body forming the stator or rotor of a dynamo-electric machine, a plurality of cooling plates of good thermal conductivity material are spaced apart between the laminations, slots are formed in the plates and the material between the slots is twisted out of the planes of the plates to form cooling fins. In cooling a stator body 1, Fig. 1, the plates 2 are extended beyond the periphery of the body and the fins formed in the extended portions. In cooling a rotor body 1, Fig. 4, a bore is formed in the body and coolings fins formed in that part of each plate located in the bore. The stator body may include internal fins as in Fig. 4, either instead of the external fins, Fig. 1, or in addition thereto. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown) axially aligned holes are formed in the stator plates beyond the stator periphery and coolant, e.g. gas or liquid, is passed through tubes (4) inserted through the holes. Cooling inserts (6) may be located inside the tubes to increase the surface area in contact with the coolant. In an enclosed machine, Fig. 8 (not shown), coolant gas is directed over the stator and rotor fins and the stator plates are cooled by coolant passed through the tubes (4) from outside the machine.
