Abstract

For use with a heater especially a railway points heater including a burner 10 fed with flammable gas from a source 13 through a conduit 12 including a temperature sensitive valve 16, an ignition device comprises a further conduit 17 through which gas flows when valve 16 is opened, motor means 22 actuated by the flow of gas and a generator 23 actuated by the motor 22 to supply electrical energy to a spark ignition plug 25 to ignite the gas at the burner 10. As shown, the motor means comprises a reed 22 downstream of a nozzle 18 which reed 22 is vibrated by gas flow to actuate a generator in the form of a piezo-electric element 23. Alternatively (as seen in Figure 2, not shown) the motor comprises a turbine and the generator comprises a permanent magnet generator; or the motor may comprise an oscillating piston which operates a linear generator. On ignition of the gas at the burner, the increase in pressure causes movement of a spring loaded piston 20 to thereby close a flap valve 19 in the conduit 17 upstream of the motor 22.
