Abstract

778,241. Heating charge. C. A. V., Ltd. Jan. 25, 1956 [Nov. 12, 1954; Jan. 22, 1955], Nos. 32790/54 and 1990/55. Class 7 (3). [Also in Groups XI and XXIX] An air-heating means for facilitating the starting of an engine whose fuel is supplied by pump injection comprises a body a, Fig. 1, inserted into the engine air intake manifold b and having a bore c through which liquid fuel is supplied for vaporization and ignition by an electrically heatable element i, m carried by the body a. As shown, a coil i vaporizes the fuel for ignition by an incandescent coil m downstream thereof and in series or parallel therewith, but the coil m may be dispensed with, the coil i being more closely coiled axially and/or radially at the outer end to provide an incandescent igniting portion. A tilting disc valve d and a switch n respectively controlling the fuel and electricity supply are conjointly operated by a control cable h. In Fig. 4 (not shown) the switch is incorporated in the body a, the movable switch member being mounted on a lift valve stem having integral therewith or attached thereto by a spring a hemispherical valve head and which is secured to the aligned core of a controlling solenoid through which the fuel passes to the valve. In Fig. 5 a spring-loaded fuel-supply valve 7 is allowed to open when current passing through the coil i causes thermal sagging of a wire 10 in the coil circuit. In Fig. 6 (not shown) the wire 10 is replaced by a single flat strip and the coil i has duplicated turns for the inner part of its length and a shield about it perforated at least on the downstream side. In Fig. 7 (not shown) a solenoid in circuit with the coil i has its core constructed as a shuttle valve controlling the supply of fuel to a closed-ended but radially perforated pipe projecting partly along the coil interior.
