Abstract

1,221,845. Laminates. FORMICA CORP. 27 June, 1968 [27 June, 1967 (2)], No. 30741/68. Heading B5N. A decorative laminate comprises a heat and pressure consolidated assembly in superimposed relationship of: (1) a base layer of at least one dried paper based sheet impregnated with a nitrile rubber latex, (2) a surfacing layer of a transparent thermoplastic film, and (3) a decorative layer which provides the decorative effect and which is positioned below the surfacing layer to be visible therethrough. The decorative layer may consist of a thermosetting resin impregnated decorative sheet; alternatively, the decorative layer is formed by back-printing the transparent thermoplastic surfacing layer. In a preferred embodiment, one or more kraft paper core sheets impregnated with a phenolformaldehyde resin are interposed between the decorative layer and the base layer. In a further preferred embodiment, a bondable metal foil e.g. of aluminium is positioned in the assembly below the decorative layer. The nitrile rubber, many of which are specified, may be blended with a latex of a homo- or co-polymer of a vinyl halide. Many suitable thermoplastic and thermosetting resins are specified.
