Abstract

1,221,610. Transitory inks. S. I. FRIEDMAN, A. F. LESHER and C. H. BEADLES. 5 Nov., 1969 [8 Nov., 1968], No. 54248/69. Heading C4A. A writing ink giving a transitory mark which then remains invisible until developed, comprises an ink vehicle and a solution of a pH- responsive chemical indicator which reversibly changes with pH from colourless to coloured, the pH of the ink being within the range in which the indicator is coloured. The indicator may be quinaldine red; ethyl red; p-nitrophenol; m - nitrophenol; 2,4 - dinitrophenol; 2,4,6 - trinitrotoluene; 1,3,5 - trinitrobenzene; 6,8 - dinitro - 2,4 - (lH)quinazolinedione - (mdinitrobenzoylene urea); phenolphthalein; o - cresolphthalein; thymolphthalein; ethylbis - (2,4 - dimethylphenyl) - acetate. The ink vehicle may include glycerine and ethanol or methanol, and/or acetone or carbon tetrachloride. The indicator is dissolved in water or an alcohol-water mixture adjusted to the required pH by means of alkali metal hydroxide, e.g. NaOH. Writing is subsequently exposed by a " revealing solution " which may be water, a base or a weak acid. Examples 1-3 disclose inks consisting of NaOH, glycerine, absolute alcohol, and (1) thymolphthalein, (2) phenolphthalein, (3) o-cresolphthalein, for which a revealing solution may be sodium carbonate or weak aqueous NaOH.
