Aliphatic α-bromocarboxylic acid bromides are produced by mixing an aliphatic carboxylic acid with phosphorus in a ratio of 3 gram moles acid to 1 gram atom of phosphorus, adding to the reaction mixture 2À5 moles of bromine per 3 moles of acid and reacting it therewith at 20-100‹ C., and thereafter adding to the reaction mixture a further mole of bromine per mole of acid and reacting it therewith at 60- 100‹ C.
