Abstract
1,221,535. Optical apparatus. BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP. Ltd. May 23, 1969 [May 23, 1968], No. 24735/68. Heading G2J. Vibrations of a surface are analysed by projecting a collimated light beam on to a parallelsided glass slab 10 to produce a linear array of fringes which are projected in a first predetermined direction on to the surface 12 when it is stationary, the surface being viewed from a second direction non-parallel with the first direction such that when the surface 12 is vibrated the position of each element in the viewing plane is shifted by an amount proportional to the displacement of the portion of the surface initially occupied by the element, and comparing the position of each element at a particular instant during the vibrations with the position of the element when the surface is stationary to obtain the profile of the vibrating surface at that instant. A photograph may be taken of the stationary and a vibrating pattern to provide correlation. If desired a reference surface 13 may be used. The surface 12 may be stroboscopically illuminated using a disc 15, the illumination being adjusted such that the vibrating surface is frozen at its maximum displacement. The light may come from a laser 11. Alternatively a highspeed camera (e. g. 100 frames/sec) films the vibrating surface.
