Abstract

1,221,181. Dyes containing cyclic imide groups. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 9 Sept., 1968 [29 Sept., 1967], No. 44469/67. Heading C4P. The invention comprises dyes free from sulphonic and carboxylic acid groups and having the general formula wherein D is a disazo dye radical, n is 1 or 2, and A is an optionally substituted aryl radical, e.g. of the benzene, naphthalene, pyridine, or diphenyl series of valency 2n having the carbonyl groups in ortho or peri-positions. They are prepared by (a) reacting one mole of an acid A((COOH) 2 ) n or the anhydride or cyclic imide thereof with n moles of an amine H 2 N-D, preferably in an inert solvent, or (b) coupling n moles of a diazotized amine with one mole of a coupling component of the formula wherein A and n are as above and E is a coupling component radical, e.g. of the acetoacetyarylamide, pyrazolone or 2-hydroxy-3- naphthoic acid arylamide series. Intermediate disazo dyes are also prepared. The dyes give yellow, orange, red and violet shades in paints and synthetic polymers, e.g. P.V.C., polythene, polystyrene and cellulose acetate.
