Abstract

1,221,100. Internal shoe drum brakes. ERNEST A. WEBB Ltd. 6 Aug., 1969 [30 Aug., 1968], No. 41562/68. Heading F2E. A brake adapted for application to a driving wheel of an industrial tractor comprises a brake drum adapted to fit between the wheel and the wheel-coupling flange on the half shaft, a backing plate having a hole of radius less than that of the coupling flange and having local enlargements to enable it to be manoevred over the flange, and a ring split diametrically and having on each half a plate extending perpendicular to it and adapted to be bolted to a square portion of the tractor axle by bolts external to the axle, the ring and backing plate having bolt holes permitting them to be secured, when fitted, in face-to-face relation. Preferably, the backing plate hole is enlarged by the provision of opposed recesses 22, Fig. 2, and a portion 23 of increased radius. To mount the brake as shown, the tractor wheel is removed and the backing plate 20 is lowered in a horizontal position over the coupling flange 12 which is passed through the recesses 22 in the hole 21 in the backing plate. The backing plate is then slid forwardly so that it drops down into position behind the coupling flange 12. The two halves of the ring 14 are then placed in position and attached to the backing plate 20 by bolts 29 and by fitting nuts 30 to studs welded into holes in the ring 14 and extending through holes in the backing plate 20. The attachment plates 16 are then joined by the bolts 17, the brake drum 28 is fitted over the wheel studs 13, and the wheel (not shown) is replaced. Finally, the brakes of both driving wheels are connected to a hand brake lever (32), (Fig. 1, not shown), by a linkage consisting of a crosstube 33 stiffened by a web 34, which is attached at its opposite ends to brake arms 35 each attached to a brake-applying shaft 19, and two links 36 (one shown in Fig. 2), connecting the cross tube 33 to a shaft (37) carrying the lever (32). The links 36 include screw adjusters. The brake includes conventional brake shoes (one shown at 24, Fig. 3), springs 25 between them, an actuating cam 26 on shaft 19, and a return spring 27.
