Abstract

1,220,994. Artificial satellites. TRW Inc. 7 March, 1968, No. 11233/68. Heading B7W. [Also in Division F3] Interconnected satellites are secured together by a releasable clamp which is so mounted as to avoid damage to solar cells and other projections upon separation in orbit. Each satellite 6 has a planar top face 8 and a frusto-conical underface 10 respectively provided with upstanding and depending flanges 26, 16 each formed at its extremity with an annular lug 52, the lugs being clamped together by a clamp ring 56 enclosed within a split ring 62 having its ends connected by a remotely-controlled explosively operated releasable attachment device 70. Tension springs 130, 142 connect ring 62 to the inner face of a channel-section annular member 90 into which the ring is withdrawn by the springs when device 70 is released to enable the connected satellites to be forcibly separated by four compression springs 44 positioned between opposed central lower and upper faces 28, 18 of the satellites. The member 90 is formed with an inwardly extending flange 92 secured to face 8 of its respective satellite by three releasable attachment assemblies 108 formed with explosive bolts 122 fired remotely to enable member 90 and its associated parts to be released from the satellite at a selected time, after separation by spring loaded devices 124 that ensure that the member is thrown clear of solar panels or other projections on the satellite.
