Abstract
1,220,743. Body armour. M. L. AVIATION CO. Ltd. 28 April, 1969 [14 May, 1968], No. 22898/68. Heading A3V. Body armour for an airman comprises a vest-like harness 1, an armoured protective shield 24 shaped to cover at least the front of the airman's torso, a pair of upper straps 6, 7 for securing the upper part of the shield to the respective shoulders of the vest-like harness 1, and lower straps 18-20 for securing the lower part of the shield to the waist of the vest-like harness to support thereby at least the greater part of the weight of the shield. The vest 1 has a sliding clasp fastener 2 at the front, and is adjustable at the waist by belt 3; webbing straps 6 and 7 are sewn to the vest at 8 and 9, and pass through buckles 10 and 11 sewn to the vest at positions below the top of the shield. The straps have pads 14, 15 of "Velcro" (Registered Trade Mark) for attachment to similar pads 30 and (31), Fig. 2 (not shown), and serve to hold the shield against the airman's chest; pads 16, 17 of "Velcro" are provided on the straps 6, 7 to co-operate with pads 14, 15 when the shield is not being worn. Lower straps 19, 20 are sewn to the vest, and are also sewn to a strap 18 having apertures 21 and a "Velcro" pad 22. The strap 18 is passed beneath the shield and is placed over a spigot 28 on the shield which passes through one of the apertures 21; "Velcro" pad 22 co-operates with a similar pad 29 on the shield. The strap 18 may be disengaged by pulling loops 23. The shield has a flared portion 25 to protect the airman's neck and preferably extends rearwardly to co-operate with the sides of the airman's seat, and is of an armoured plastics material such as to Department of Technical Development DTD/900/4875; the vest is of "Terylene" (Registered Trade Mark).
