Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A method of binding books or book sections comprises sewing a sheet binding seam using threading having an outer surface of thermoplastic material such as polyvinyl chloride or natural silk and which becomes looped together at thread crossing locations 8, and welding the threading together by fusion at the thread crossing locations. One or two threads may be employed. The welding process employs a high frequency or ultrasonic technique, and is carried out by clamping the sheets to be bound between a platen (15), Fig. 3 (not shown), and a bar electrode (16) and applying a high frequency signal across the platen and the electrode. The thread may comprise a nylon or cotton core within a polyvinyl chloride sheath (Fig. 6, not shown), or a core and surface coating of like synthetic thermoplastic materials having different fusion characteristics. A cover 10 of thermoplastic material may be applied to the sheets to be bound before or after sewing and is welded to the thread during the welding operation. A first cover (20), Fig. 7 (not shown), may be applied before sewing and a second (21) after sewing so that the thread is welded therebetween. The thread and cover may be of contrasting colours to prevent fraudulent unfastening of the binding. The binding seam may be applied before or after folding of the sheets.
