Abstract

1,198,367. Reinforcing edges of non-metallic sheet material. H. FENDT and X-FENDT. 23 Jan., 1968 [4 March, 1967], No. 3560/68. Heading B5K. [Also in Division Dl] Elastic tape 2 is secured to a textile article 1 made of natural or synthetic fibres by spot welding the ends of the tape 2 to the article whilst the tape is held under tension, a component of thermoplastic material being incorporated in each weld. As shown, a cutout 1, e.g. of baby pants made of cellulose fibres, in positioned on a base-plate 4. Elastic tapes 2 are positioned parallel to the upper and lower edges of the cutout and are held taut at their ends by clamping or holding devices (not shown). The tapes 2 are preferably made of or coated with thermoplastic material, Alternatively, a thread of thermoplastic material may be added to or twined with the elastic tape. The ends of the tapes are spot welded at 3 to the cutout 1 by heat and pressure. Additional spot welded joints, 3<SP>1</SP> may be provided between the joints 3. To secure elastic tapes along curved lines, e.g. around the leg openings of the pants, the plate 4 is provided with needles or pins 5 which either penetrate the cutout 1 or abut the edge thereof. If the tapes 2 are to be enclosed by subsequent folding over of the edge of the cutout, cuts 6, in the inner vertex of each of which a pin 5 is located, are formed in the cutout, Fig. 3. The tapes 2 are laid around the pins 5 and held under at their ends whilst welding takes place. Preferably, two spot welds 3<SP>1</SP> are formed at each cut 6. The welding tool is provided with a number of welding devices so that all the spot welds 3, 3<SP>1</SP> are formed simultaneously. After the tapes 2 have been secured a pattern template (7), Fig. 2 (not shown), is applied so that its lateral edges coincide with fold lines a, b, Fig. 1. End parts 1<SP>1</SP> are folded inwards about the lines a and the lower part of the cutout is folded upwards about the line b and the superimposed parts in the region of the parts 1<SP>1</SP> are welded together. In a modification (not shown), the tapes 2 are provided in stitched hems. .
