The present inventiozr is directed to guiding devices for fabric during the course of sewing operations, and more particularly to a device which renders it feasible to sew or hem both edges of a piece of fabricat the same time; In the production of various articles on a com mercial scale, it becomes necessary to sew or hem both edges of a relatively long strip of fabric.
l Po-accomplish this; it has become customary to:
pass the fabric; through suitable folders and thenthrough the sewing machine in order'to hem one of the edges thereof? 7 Then it was necessaryto fold or r011 the sewed fabric and then pass the same al-gainthroughthe' -sewi'ng machine in a similar manner in order to-hemthe opposite edge thereof. Y Y
attempts have'been' made to conduct the; operationas a: sing-1e unit by passing the fabric" reclaims; (01. 112- 152 tical" angle members 5 and '6 secured to mem her 1 below bed i of the machine. Members 5' and 6 constitute a frame on which theguiding' device is mounted. It includes a rod 8 at the lower end of angles 5 and 6 placed in a position which is at" a small or acute angle to t-he horizontal; One end of rod 8 passes through through the sewing machine tosew bothedges attire same time. However, such attempts have failed'beeause of various difiicultie's which render it impossible to accomplish the" same.- The present invention seeks to overcome suchdiffic'ulf ties and disadvantages and toprovide a method of sewing. fabric and a' de'vice tor -accomplish; mgthe purpose,- whereby: a-g-singlje passage of the fabric throughthe edgesthereoi' I w v i V It also among the objectsof the presentinvention to" provide a device which isI-si-mple in character and which may be attached to amachine will sew both standard. sewing machine; said device acting" as a: guide and accomplishing: the" desired-results;
It. isfurther among the objects oi the present invention. to provide a device of: the character described; wherein the guide member has ele-- ments which are. adiustableto provide the desired: direction ,of; passage of; theiabric and. to
maintain, adjustand alter tensions thereon; in
r are held therein-byciamping' nuts. A guide plate device shown in Fig. 1v and iilustrating particw; I
larly the relative arrangement of guideandtheneedleseof thesewing machine.
There isprovided the usual sewing. machine having a--base or bed- I and a sewin head 2 having a'pair of needles 3 and 4 therein? None of the mechanism of the sewing machine is illustrated or. described andsai'd machine operates as usual."
At the front ofthe base i are a pair' of ver-' opening 3 in angle E and is heldin position by nuts in. A slot H' in angle 5- is provided at the lower end thereof. The free end of rod ii passes through slot If and anut [2' is threaded on the end of said rod whereby the same may be clamped in any one of a plurality of positions, as shown: in Fig; 1 Just above rod dis a pair of horizontal parallel bars l t secured: between end members-- it and? having threaded rods #5 passing through openings in angles 5 and t2 Nuts 16 some as means for clampingthe same to the frame; r
Above the pivoted bars: are a series of four horizontarfixedbarsi- Ll; the ends of which pass through openings'in-angles 5 and 6 and the rods Ht fits over rods ti in: vertical position approximately centrally of said rods. Movable guide plates t9: and were mounted on either side of plate "3- and; a thread and nut arrangement 21:
and 22 is provided lior clamping plates l9 and 20' in adjusted positions;
Above the fixed bars there is mounted a fixed rod 23 between angles 5 and 6. A pairof swinging' bars 24 in a: horizontal position is mounted on:v end members" 25;. the latter being loosely mounted on red 23;- Thereby the frame just.
formed is; adapted to swing. Two such swinging framesare providedeachbeing on one side of the center OfeI'0df23L-f Y 7 At the top of angles 5" and 8 is secureda rod 26 having mounted thereon a pair of wheels 2! whichzareiprovided with convexiaces, bosses 23 having set screws therein; providing means for fi-xingpthe positiorrof said wheels on-rod Zfi.
The-frame and, its associated guide parts are so mounted that the center line thereof is approximately between needles 3 and t. Folders or hemming attachments 29 are secured to basewheel 21 and folder 29 as indicated at 35. It then passes under needle 3 as shown at 36 so that the other side of the fabric is hemmed.
The inclination of rod 8 from the horizontal gives asufficient angle to the fabric as it passes around the same to cause it to travel parallel to V fabric and a proper positioning thereof ,in the sewing machine is obtained. Depending upon the width of the cloth will depend the angle of rod 8. It may be adjusted to various angles based upon the type of fabric, its width and other factors. Pivoted bars l3fmay be held in a position where practically no tension is exerted on either of the plies of fabric passing through the same. If desired, bars l3 may be twisted into one position or the opposite one so as to exert tension on the other of said plies.
Guide plates l9 and 20 may be adjusted lateral] on bars I! so that they prevent the fabric from moving from side to side and thus insurea proper movement of the fabric into the needles. Wheels 2'! need not necessarily be rotatable and their position may be other than shown at the top. of the guide frame. entirely omitted.
Although the invention has been described set-. ting forth a single embodiment thereof, it will be apparent to those skilled in the art that various changes in the details and construction may be made within the spirit of the invention- The guide frame need not be made of angles but may be made of other structural shapes and the several bars and rods may be held therein differently than shown. Some of the bars may be omitted or others may be added to givedecreased or increased efiects. Various materials of construction as are well known may be employed. These and other changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the inventionpthe scope of which is to be broadly constructed and not to be limited except by the character of the claims appended hereto.
