Abstract

1,220,568. Acrylic acid. KNAPSACK A.G. 22 Aug., 1969 [28 Aug., 1968], No. 41948/69. Heading C2C. [Also in Division B1] Acrylic acid is prepared by the oxidation of propylene by contacting a gas mixture of propylene, oxygen, steam and if desired, inert gas at between 280‹ and 600‹ C., 0.5 and 10 atmospheres absolute, and for 0À1 to 20 seconds in the presence of a catalyst in two layers, the first layer consisting of one or more oxides of iron, bismuth, molybdenum and optionally silver and phosphorus in atomic ratio Ag 0-1 . 5 , Fe 0 . 1-12 , Bi 0 . 1-12 , P 0-5 , Mo 12 , O 30-110 , and a second layer downstream consisting of one or more oxides of cobalt, molybdenum, and optionally tellurium and boron in atomic ratio Co 0 . 5-1 . 5 , Mo 1 , Te 0-1 , B 0-1 , O 3-8 . The two catalysts being in the volume ratio of 1 : 20 to 20 : 1. At least one of the two layers may be deposited on a carrier such as silicon carbide, aluminium oxide or silicic acid or in particle form (2-8 mm.) admixed with silicon carbide particles. The gas from the reaction may be precooled and scrubbed with water, heated to expel acrolein and recycled.
