Abstract

1,219,989. Can ends. A. K. UNSWORTH. 20 May, 1969 [22 May, 1968], No. 24535/68. Heading B8D. A hole in a sheet metal can end is closed by a piercable or tearable covering of polyamide material having a melting point of at least 155‹ C., said covering being bonded to the external can end face around the hole by an adhesive capable of withstanding the pressures and temperatures to which the can contents are subjected in sterilization processes. The covering is preferably formed of sheet material having a thickness of 0À05-1À0 mm. and is provided with a tear tag and is heat-sealed to the adhesive. The polyamide may be a linear lactam polymer, e.g. polylaurolactam, or an aliphatic diamine-dicarboxylic acid condensation product. The adhesive is preferably the reaction product obtained by heating an interpolymer of 80-95% by weight of vinyl chloride, 3-19% by weight of vinyl acetate and 0À5- 2% by weight of maleic anhydride with an epoxy resin, an epoxidized phenolic novolak or a phenolic resole or mixture thereof. The adhesive is preferably applied in liquid form to a metal sheet prior to cutting out the can end blanks and the hole or holes therein. Other suitable adhesives are referred to. The sheet metal of the can end may be aluminium, blackplate, tin plate or blackplate coated with another metal or metal admixed with a metal oxide.
