Abstract
998,102. Opening containers. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO. Ltd. April 4, 1962 [April 7, 1961], No. 12854/62. Heading B8D. A wall member of a container is formed of two layers 4, 6 of sheet material bonded together over an area 8, lying outside an interrupted line 13 in Fig. 1, and having a score line 19 which, in the unbonded area 18, extends through the outer layer 4 to provide a tab enabling a strip to be torn from the wall member. The unbonded area may form a strip in a minor segment of the circular end wall of a container, Fig. 3 (not shown); or it may be circular and concentric with the circular end wall, Fig. 4 (not shown), and the score line may be deeper, on one side of the tag, where it crosses the border of the unbonded zone, Fig. 7 (not shown). The unbonded zone may be eccentric as at 372, Fig. 11, the score line 319 being designed to form a pouring opening. Again, Fig. 13, the unbonded area 485 may be in the external part of the end seam of the container and the scoring 414 extend round the outer face of the seam enabling the container top to be completely removed. The tab may be bordered by an arcuate depression in the unbonded area of the wall member, Fig. 15 (not shown). Both layers 4, 6 of the container may be formed of aluminium, plastics or fibrous material; alternatively, one layer may be formed of a different one of these materials. The outer layer 4 is thicker and of greater tensile strength than the inner layer 6. The bonding of the two layers may be effected either by heat and pressure or by an adhesive. Other modifications are described.
