[Also in Division C5] Chemical reactions are performed in a fluidised bed between two primary reactants (a reactant gas and a fluid material), the fluidised bed being divided into at least one riser and at least one downcomer region by at least one dividing member which is shorter than the internal length of the reaction vessel and the fluid material being injected or atomized into the reactant gas in the bed through at least one nozzle associated with each riser, by the method of 1,154,321 modified in that heat is supplied to the primary reactants by (a) introducing with the primary reactants a further reactant or reactants, other than air or oxygen, which further reactants undergo an exothermic reaction or (b) introducing at or near the top of the riser or risers a further reactant or reactants which undergo an exothermic reaction with themselves or with the product of the primary reaction or (c) heating the reaction zone within the riser or risers by indirect heat exchange, for example through the reaction vessel walls or by constructing the dividing members as a hollow double-walled vessel as in Specification 1,133,483 in which vessel an exothermic reaction may be conducted or which may be heated by a heat-exchange fluid such as molten metal.
