Abstract
Hydrocarbons are converted, esp. reformed, by circulating a charge of H2 and hydrocarbons through a reaction space contg. a granular catalyst, pref. supported noble metal, the space being divided into a no. of elementary catalytic zones (A) of relatively large cross-section, where the charge flows from top to bottom, connected by elementary catalytic zones (B) of relatively small cross-section, the gas stream leaving one zone (A) being subdivided into a 1st part which passes through a zone (B) to feed the next zone (A), and a 2nd part which is passed into a heat-exchange zone before being fed into the next zone (A), the catalyst being progressively drawn off at the bottom and replaced by fresh catalyst at the top so as to maintain a high and constant level of activity at each point in the catalytic space. The catalyst is pref. drawn off periodically set intervals of 0.5-20 days, the amt. being withdrawn being 3-30% of the total catalyst.
