Abstract
1,219,903. Purification of methionine. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 29 April, 1968 [1 May, 1967], No. 20017/67. Heading C2C. Aqueous solutions of methionine that contain homocystine as an impurity are treated with a chemical compound to convert the said homocystine to a compound or compounds that is/are more water-soluble, thus enabling the methionine to be precipitated as easily-filterable crystals. Preferred reagents are those that destroy the -S-S- bond of homocystine, particularly sodium bisulphite, sodium metabisulphite and potassium cyanide. The methionine solution may contain dissolved salts, e.g. up to 40% by weight of ammonium sulphate.
