Abstract

1,219,029. Electric couplings. R.T.E. CORP. 19 March, 1969, No.14312/69. Heading H2E. A high voltage cable 10 is tapped by removing its semi-conductive screening layer 13 and sheath 14 from part of its length, enclosing the exposed insulation 12 in a housing 16 containing resilient insulating material 18 having a passage 28 for cable 10 and a passage 30 for a branch cable 43 which has a probe 74 at its end which is forced into engagement with the conductor 11 of cable 10 by a device 42. Device 42 comprises a rigid polypropylene tube 62 at one end abutting the body 70 of probe 74, and at the other being placed beneath the cut-back end 66 of the semi-conductive sheath of cable 43 and abutting a split ring 60 on which is placed a washer 58 which abuts an internal flange 56 of a collar 41, to transmit axial movement to probe 74 when collar 41 is threaded on to housing 16 at 40. Housing 16, formed as two halves 16a, (16b, Fig. 3, not shown) of metal or conductively coated plastics, is connected to the ends of semi-conductive layer 13 at a lug 19. Insulation 18 of elastomer or silicone rubber is formed as jaws 22, (24) hinged at 26 and having 'co-operating corrugated surfaces. Prior to insertion of cables 10, 43, silicone grease is placed in passage 28 to subsequently complete sealing of the tapping, and passage 30 may be plugged, the plug being removed when probe 74 is to be inserted. Probe 74 may be screwthreaded and be forced into insulation 12 by twisting cable 43 prior to operation of device 42. In an alternative embodiment (Figs. 4-9, not shown), collar 41 is replaced by a collar (142) threaded on to housing (156), the collar having a further internal thread receiving a further collar (132) abutting a washer around a tapered split ring (136) on the cable as above. The resilient insulation is formed as two parts, one (106) disposed above cable 10 and having two longitudinal ridges co-operating with grooves in a part (102) disposed below cable 10.
