Abstract

1,218,830. Variable denier synthetic yarns. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 19 May, 1969 [12 June, 1968], No. 27906/68. Heading B5B. Variable denier yarns of synthetic polymers are produced by drawing undrawn yarn between feed and draw rolls set to rotate at different speeds defining a draw ratio lower than the " natural draw ratio " across a " neck " of the yarn, and causing the yarn in the span between the feed and draw rolls and a heat source consisting of a portion of a flame or hot gas stream intermittently to come into close proximity or contact with one another according to a programme so as to form " necks " in the yarn. The yarn may be moved into and out of contact with the flame or hot gas stream, e.g. by means of passing the yarn through guides on an electro-mechanical vibrator controlled by a signal generator. Alternatively the flame or hot gas stream may be deflected into and out of contact with the yarn, e.g. by means of a jet of compressed air modulated by a fluid logic element controlled electromagnetically. In both cases the movement is controlled according to a programme which may be periodic or pseudo-random, e.g. by means of periodic or pseudo-random pulses from the signal generator. The yarn thus produced has thicker portions or nubs of lengths and spacings corresponding to the pulse lengths and spacings of the programme. Typically, mean nub lengths are 1-25 inch, mean nub spacings are 1-100 inch, and the mean nub peak denier is 1À2 to 4 times the denier of the thinner sections. Preferred polymers are polyhexamethylene adipamide (nylon 6À6) and polyethylene terephthalate. Examples of production are given.
