Abstract

1,218,798. Slueing jib cranes. JOHNSON & WAYNE Ltd., and H. W. SIMPSON. 3 Nov., 1969 [5 Nov., 1968], No. 52283/68. Heading B8B. A jib crane (not shown) is prevented from slueing into a predetermined sector by safety means which interrupt the operation of power slueing means and initiate the operation of braking means. Fig. 2 shows at P, Q the slueing ones of two tower cranes with working areas PRS, QRS overlapping in the cross-hatched area SR. Each crane has an infra-red transmitter and an infra-red receiver, the former transmitting only when the associated jib is outside the respective sector PRS, QRS. The arrangement is such that when one jib is in the sector PRS, QRS and the other jib is slued so as to bring it into the sector QRS, PRS its slueing power is cut off and its slueing brake applied, through a control circuit, Fig. 3 (not shown). This arrangement is suitable when the jibs are at the same height, but is unduly restrictive when one jib is higher than the other when a modified circuit, Fig. 4 (not shown), allows full slueing when the saddle of the higher crane jib covers only the area MNQ within the sector QRS. Audible warning is given by an alarm bell and the encroaching jib may be slued back out of its predetermined sector. The alarm bell sounds when the operator locks the jib against slueing so as to pass safely through the slueing section to ground where switching off the power releases the braking means and turns off the alarm, while allowing the jib to slue in the wind. Braking means may be provided by passing direct current through the stator and the rotor of an induction motor used for slueing the jib.
