Abstract
1,218,485. Polymer dispersions. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 2 June, 1969 [31 July, 1968; 19 Dec., 1968], No. 27713/69. Headings C3G and C3P. [Also in Division C4] A liquid composition suitable for use as a leak-stopper in heat-exchangers or other vessels comprises (A) a liquid which is inert to the inside of the vessel and to component (B) under the conditions of using said composition and (B) dispersed in component A, spherical particles of a polymeric material insoluble in A, from 5 to 85% by weight of said particles having an average diameter of 0-1 to 20Á and 95 to 15% of said particles having an average diameter of 21 to 1000 Á. The polymeric material B may contain a polymeric dispersion stabilizer composed of polymer molecules having one portion soluble in liquid A and another portion insoluble in liquid A but soluble in the monomer from which material B is prepared, e.g. a graft polymer comprising, as the portion soluble in liquid A, a backbone which is polyvinyl pyrrolidone, polyethylene glycol, polyethylene imine, polyacrylic acid or polyitaconic acid, and, as the portion insoluble in A, a graft component which is polystyrene or a copolymer of styrene with an unsaturated carboxylic acid. Preferably at least some of the particles of diameter 21Á or more are hollow. In the examples, (a) styrene and methacrylic acid are copolymerized in ethylene glycol containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone and hexamethoxymethyl melamine is added to the resulting dispersion before it is incorporated in an anti-freeze composition containing water, antifoam and corrosion inhibitor, and (b) styrene is partially polymerized in butanol containing polyvinyl pyrrolidone and polymerization is completed in ethylene glycol, the resulting dispersion being used as in (a).
