Abstract
1,188,736. Porous polymers. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 1 March, 1968, No. 10038/68. Heading C3P. Porous copolymers are obtained by copolymerizing a hydrophilic monomer which is a mono-acrylate or methacrylate of a hydrophilic polyol with a cross-linking agent soluble in the monomer mixture in the presence of an initiator and an inert liquid which dissolves the monomers but does not dissolve or swell the copolymer formed. The copolymer is formed in the presence of the inert liquid alone or in aqueous suspension e.g. using magnesium hydroxide as suspending agent. Specific ester monomers are acrylates and methacrylates of ethylene glycol, diethylene glycol, glycerol, mannitol or pentaerythritol and preferred cross-linking agents are diacrylate or methacrylate esters of glycol or polyglycols. Other monomers may be included containing ionic groups, e.g. (meth)acrylic acid, maleic anhydride, itaconic acid, ester or salt of ethylene sulphonic acid, styrene sulphonic acid, or dimethylacrylamide which may subsequently be reduced and quaternized. A small amount of a swelling agent for the copolymer may also be added. In the examples benzoyl peroxide or diisopropyl peroxydicarbonate is used as initiator. The products are particularly useful as chromatographic sorbents and for this purpose polymerization may be effected in situ in a tube. The products may also be after-treated; hydrochloric acid or thionyl chloride replaces the hydroxyl groups with chlorine and the chloro-polymers may be further treated with amines, cyanides (followed by hydrolysis), sulphites or hydrosulphides.
