Abstract

1350474 Articles of bulk polymerized acrylic copolymers HYDROPHILICS INTERNATIONAL Inc 13 May 1971 [13 May 1970 3 May 1971] 14847/71 Heading C3P [Also in Division G2] Hydrophilic polymer articles comprise a polymer made by bulk polymerization at an initial temperature of 40-65‹ C. and a final temperature of 80-95‹ C. of a monomer mixture comprising 50-95% of one or more C 1 -C 4 alkyl acrylates and/or methacrylates, 5-30% of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, and 0-20% of one or more C 8 -C 18 aliphatic esters of acrylic and/or methacrylic acid, the percentages being by volume, based on the total monomer volume, the carboxylic acid groups on at least one surface of the article having been neutralized (without saponification of ester groups). The polymers are prepared in the form of, e.g. sheets or rods by carrying out the bulk polymerization in situ in a mould or casting cell, using a free radical generator, e.g. azodiisobutyronitrile, or U.V. light as initiator. Small amounts of a chain stopper, e.g. dodecyl mercaptan, and a cross-linker, e.g. ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, allyl methacrylate or divinyl benzene, may also be present. Neutralization is effected by treating the article with an aqueous base, such as NaOH, NH 4 OH, KOH, Ca(OH) 2 , ethanolamine or sodium tripolyphosphate. Neutralization may also be effected throughout the article, the depth of neutralization depending on the concentration of the base, and the duration of the treatment. The neutralized portions are hydrophilic and swell in water, in which state they can absorb therapeutic agents, such as pilocarpine, which are then slowly released by the polymer. In the examples sheets, rods or contact lenses, are formed from polymers or methylmethacrylate and acrylic acid, with or without ethylene glycol-dimethacrylate, divinyl benzene or ethyl hexyl acrylate, and are treated with NH 4 OH or NaOH. In Example 11, a contact lens of the invention is treated with pilocarpine solution; when in use, the substance is slowly released into the eye.
