Abstract

1,218,288. Grafted acrylic elastomers. UGINE KUHLMANN. 10 April, 1968 [10 April, 1967], No. 17323/68. Heading C3G. A graft polymer is obtained by polymerization of 25 to 95 parts by weight of a mixture of monomers A and B in which A is at least one vinyl aromatic monomer in the proportion of 60 to 100% by weight of A+B B, is at least one ethylenic nitrile in the proportion of 40 to 0% of A + B, C is one or more other copolymerizable monomers in the proportion of 0 to 30% of A+B, the polymerization being carried out in the presence of 75 to 5 parts of an elastomeric substrate comprising an interpolymer of a which is at least one ester of acrylic acid and a C 1 to C 8 -aliphatic alcohol in the proportion of 80 to 99% of the total a+b, b is at least one ester of formula in which R 1 and R 2 represent a hydrogen atom or methyl group, in the proportion of 20 to 1% of a + b, and c is one or more other copolymerizable monomers in the proportion of 0 to 30% of a + b. Monomer A may be styrene, alpha-methyl styrene, a halo styrene or an alkyl-styrene. Specified monomers B are acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile and methylene glutaronitrile. Monomer C is e.g. an acrylate or methacrylate ester. Specified monomers b are acrylic and methacrylic esters of tetrahydrobenzyl alcohol and 3 - cyclohexenyl - 1 - methyl acrylate and methacrylate. Monomer c may be one of the said nitriles styrene, a vinyl ester, a vinyl alkyl ether, divinyl benzene or allyl acrylate or methacrylate. Examples are given of grafting styrene and acrylonitrile on to an ethyl acrylate-tetrahydrobenzyl acrylate elastomer, the resulting graft polymers being blended with methylene bis-stearamide and, optionally, a styreneacrylonitrile resin.
