Abstract

1,218,083. Removing acid gases from gas mixtures. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 21 May, 1969 [17 June, 1968], No. 28680/68. Heading B1L. Acid gases, especially CO 2 , are separated from admixture with other gases, e.g. H 2 , by absorption using a solution containing an alkaline alkali metal or ammonium salt together with a sec. alkandamine of formula either HO.CH 2 CH 2 .NRH wherein R is C n H 2n+1 or is an alkyl group having at least one N- oontaining substituent group, or HO.CH(CH 3 ) CH 2 .NR'H wherein R' is C n H 2n+1 or C n H 2n OH. The alkaline salt is preferably K 2 CO 3 and may be present in amounts up to 50%, suitably 25-35%, by weight of the solution. The sec. alkandamine, which is most suitably methyl- or ethyl-aminoethanol or diisopropanol-amine, generally comprises up to 5%, preferably 2.5-3%, of the solution. Absorption is most suitably effected at 80-115‹C. under superatmospheric pressure, regeneration being achieved preferably at 100-115‹C. by releasing the pressure to atmospheric, and optionally also purging the solution with air, N 2 , or preferably steam.
