A multiplex data transmission system conveys a number of data channels in a frequency band, e.g. 60 to 108 kHz, which would otherwise be used for a number of telephone channels and their respective signalling channels. Alternatively some of the telephone channels may be transmitted together with a data transmission which replaces the remaining channels. Fig. 2 shows a system in which data input signals are modulated in two stages of modulation so that the twelve input data channels occupy a band of 60 to 108 kHz. Any one data channel may be replaced by a conventional multiplex telegraph channel WT. In Fig. 3 (not shown) a number of telephone channels in a multiplex system may be replaced by one or more data channels.
