Abstract

1,217,747. Hydraulic brake systems. NORTH AMERICAN ROCKWELL CORP. 4 June, 1968 [8 April, 1968], No. 26382/68. Heading F2F. An hydraulic brake system for a wheeled vehicle comprises a service brake circuit having a master cylinder 10 and hydraulic service actuators 30, 32, 44, 46 and an independent auxiliary brake circuit having a pump 62 for developing and maintaining hydraulic pressure in the auxiliary brake circuit to maintain mechanically powered actuators 52, 54 in a brakes off position and a valve 88 for relieving the hydraulic pressure in the auxiliary circuit to allow the auxiliary actuators 52, 54 to apply the brakes. The valve 88 is spring biased to its open position and is closed (thereby maintaining the auxiliary actuators in the brakes off position) by supplying electric current to a coil 90 connected in series with a driver's switch 114, a normally closed switch 110c opened if the travel of pedal 16 exceeds a given limit, an engine inlet manifold vacuum operated switch 108 and an ignition key operated switch 106. When the switch 114 is in the brakes on position (shown) a warning lamp 122 is energized. The pump 62 is driven by an electric motor 94 controlled by a pressure switch 76. A buzzer 100 warns the driver when motor 94 is running. The auxiliary circuit also includes a check valve 70 and a pressure relief valve 80. Lead 119 is connected to the vehicle stop light.
