Abstract

1,217,446. Dilatant polymer latexes. SHERWIN-WILLIAMS CO. 24 March, 1969 [7 June, 1968], No. 15360/69. Heading C3P. Dilatant polymer latexes are prepared by emulsion polymerizing a monomer mixture comprising (a) an aliphatic monoethylenically unsaturated monoester having 4-8 C atoms, (b) a second and different aliphatic monoethylenically unsaturated monoester having 5-13 C atoms and (c) 1-5% by weight of total monomers of an aliphatic alpha-beta monoethylenically unsaturated monocarboxylic acid having 3-4 C atoms, the molar ratio of (a) to (b) being from 3: 1 to 1: 10; the polymerization being effected in the presence of from 1-25% by weight of the monomers of a water-soluble polyhydric alcohol in which the resultant polymer is substantially insoluble; and the polymer latex obtained being neutralized with a base to a pH of at least 7. (A dilatant latex is a latex which tends to increase in viscosity with increased shear rate and working.) The monomer mixture may also include from 1-5% by weight of an additional and different monomer selected from diacetone acrylamide, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, N - methylolacrylamide, acrylamide, glycidyl methacrylate, 2 - hydroxy - ethyl methacrylate, 2-hydroxypropyl methacrylate, dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate and t-butylaminoethyl methacrylate. A small amount of partially hydrolysed polyvinyl alcohol may be included as a thickening agent in the polymerization system. The ester monomer (a) may be an alkyl acrylate, methacrylate or chloroacrylate or a vinyl ester of C 2 -C 6 aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. Monomer (b) may be an alkyl acrylate, methacrylate or chloroacrylate or a vinyl ester of an aliphatic monocarboxylic acid. Suitable as acid monomer (c) are acrylic, methacrylic, α- or #-chloroacrylic, crotonic, isocrotonic, chlorocrotonic and chloroisocrotonic acids. Polyhydric alcohol components specified are C 2 -C 6 aliphatic glycols, N,N,N<SP>1</SP>,N<SP>1</SP> - tetrakis - (2 - hydroxypropyl) ethylenediamine, dipropylene glycol and bis- (4 - hydroxypropoxyphenyl) - dimethylmethane. In examples polymerization is effected with cumene hydroperoxide/ferrous sulphate/sodium sulphoxylate formaldehyde or potassium persulphate catalyst, and the latexes are neutralized with ammonia, or ammonia plus ethyleneimine or propyleneimine. A paint is formulated using one of the dilatant latexes as vehicle in combination with an aqueous pigment base containing polymeric anionic surfactant, alkyl phenol polyethoxyethanol, ammonium hydroxide, titanium dioxide, magnesium silicate, mica and sodium alginate.
