Abstract

1,217,264. Circuit assemblies. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 2 Dec., 1968 [12 Jan., 1968], No. 57056/68. Heading H1R. A multiplex directional coupler unit comprises three circuit boards which are in parallel and in register with one another, the two outside boards being provided with a plurality of strip line directional couplers the input and output connections to the directional couplers being made to the middle board. The package of Fig. 1 contains two identical coupler board assemblies 12, 14 each assembly consisting of coupler boards 16, 18, having strip line conductors sandwiched between two outer ground plane conductors, and a transition board 26 located between the coupler boards. The coupler boards 16, 18, Fig. 3, have grouped lands 20, 22 between which strip transmission lines 28 are connected. Branch transmission lines 30 run parallel to the main transmission lines 28 between a further group of lands 24 and terminating resistors 32. The transition board 26 is provided with contacts 42, 47, 48 along three edges of the board 26, Fig. 4. The contacts 42 along the input side 44 of board 26 are connected by means of etched circuits 58 to conductive pins 60 arranged in groups half of the pins extending upwards to coupler board 16 and half extending down to coupler board 18, Fig. 5 (not shown), corresponding to the lands 20 to provide connection therewith. A row of pins 70 at the output side 46 of the board having the same groupings as pins 60 connected by circuits 49 to output contacts 47 permit the lands 22 to be connected to the contacts 47. The contacts 48 on the edge 52 of the board 26 are connected by circuits 51 to a further row of pins parallel to pins 60 to provide connection with the lands 24 at the ends of the branch transmission lines 30 on boards 16, 18. Input and output connections are made to the board 26 by means of plugs 94 which connects simultaneously to connectors 54, 96 of the upper and lower transition board 26. The two assemblies are packaged into a watertight package by means of metallic covers 76, 86 and gaskets 84, 92 and include resilient pads 80 for shock absorbing.
