Abstract

1,217,220. Stockings. RIDLEY, SPRIGGS & JOHNSON Ltd. and M. R. JOHNSON. 28 Oct., 1969 [7 Aug., 1968], No. 37582/68. Heading A3V. A circularily knitted stocking 10 has a stretchable tubular top portion 11 with a course-wise 13 or wale-wise (18) opening through which the leg L<SP>1</SP> of the wearer, unclothed by the article, may pass, the top margin 14 thus encircling the wearer's waist. The top portion thus covers the upper thigh 15 and hip-to-crotch portion 16 of the clothed leg L and also the lower waist 17, so that a pair of such stockings effectively forms a pair of tights. The top part is preferably slackly knitted and the opening may be provided by part coursing with either a draw thread or dissoluble yarn. Alternatively the course-wise opening may be formed in a run-resistant fabric by cutting or slitting.
