Abstract
1,217,019. Typewriters. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORP. 18 Nov., 1968 [22 Nov., 1967], No. 54541/68. Heading B6F. Case shift mechanism.-In a typewriter having a single tyre element 11 which is positionable upon depression of a character key by interposers such as 56, 57 acting on selector latches 68, 68<SP>1</SP> the interposers being operated in coded combinations by bails 47, 47<SP>1</SP> selected by coding bars (42), Fig. 1, not shown, alternative characters for certain keys may be selected by a case shift key 95 which acts to bring a pawl 74 into engagement relationship with an interposer 57, the pawl being carried by an additional interposer 72 operated by an alternative character selection bail 51. The alternative bail 51 is operated by projections (49, Fig. 1) present on some coding bars for every actuation of those coding bars, but the alternative character is selected only if the case shift key 95 has been previously depressed. The interposer 57 acts to produce one unit rotation of the type element 11, and may be operated by a bail 47 which is operable by a " normal " projection (48a) as well as by the bail 51 through the interposer 72. The case shift key 95 may be provided with a latch locking means, or the interposer 72 may be provided with such locking means.
