Abstract
1,216,660. Spigot-and-socket couplings for pipes. ALLIED IRONFOUNDERS Ltd. 4 March, 1968 [2 March, 1967], No. 9970/67. Heading F2G. A pipe coupling, which is of plastic material, consists of a body 1 providing a bore 3 to receive a pipe or cylindrical spigot 5, which abuts against a shoulder 12 such that the inside diameter of the pipe is flush with a communicating bore 6 in the body 1, a cap 8, having an internal screw thread 9 of buttress form (Fig. 3, not shown) engaging a screw thread 2 also of buttress form (Fig. 2, not shown) on the body, being tightened on the body to cause a frustoconical internal surface 11 of the cap to engage a complementary surface 7a of an integral skirt 7 on the body 1 and thereby compress the skirt against the pipe 5, the arrangement being such that the radial faces of the buttress threading take the reaction forces during tightening. The coupling may connect either metal or plastic pipes. In the latter case a metal sleeve is first inserted in the end of each pipe to prevent its being deformed. The coupling body may either be single or double ended, a suitable arrangement, e.g. a screw threaded spigot, being provided in the former case to connect it to a reservoir or the like.
