In a frequency changer comprising an inverter 38 supplied from a rectifier 20 . . . 25, the intermediate direct current is stabilized by alternately charging and discharging a capacitor 31 in series with the inverter 38 under control of a bridge of thyristors 27 . . . 30, an inductor 36 and free-wheeling diode 35 being included for smoothing. The bridge of thyristors 27 . . . 30 is preferably shunted by a further thyristor 31 which is made continuously conductive when full output is required. The inverter current is monitored by resistor 37 and determines the firing times of the regulating thyristors 27. . . 30. Each time a pair of thyristors 28, 29 or 27, 30 is triggered, capacitor 32 charges or discharges through the inverter 38 so that the inverter input voltage has the form of a spaced sawtooth (Fig. 3, not shown) the average value of which is determined by the trigger control circuit 40. A damped resonating inductor 33, 34 is included. The inverter 38 may include a resonant circuit 39 supplying an inductive heater. A plurality of bridges 27 . . . 30 may be connected in parallel and triggered sequentially.
