A D.C. supply circuit for an electrostatic precipitator F includes a differentiating transformer T, the primary of which is connected in series with the precipitator. When a flashover occurs, the current in the primary increases rapidly producing a voltage pulse in the secondary, and this pulse is applied to a control device Re which reduces the supply voltage. In the absence of a flash-over, the output voltage of the transformer T is substantially zero.
