Abstract
1,215,558. Folding paper. PHILIPS ELECTRONIC & ASSOCIATED INDUSTRIES Ltd. 4 Nov., 1969 [7 Nov., 1968], No. 53989/69. Heading B8R. A device for zig-zag folding a strip of paper issuing from a machine recording information on the paper, comprises a feed mechanism for pulling the strip into the device, a control member responsive to the tension on the strip for controlling the feed mechanism, and an oscillatory folding member driven from the feed mechanism. As shown in Fig. 1, the feed mechanism consists of two coaxial motor-driven toothed wheels 1 engaging perforations in the strip, each wheel having a circumference equal to twice the length of strip between folds. The folding member is formed by two parallel plates 3, 4 and is pivoted at its upper end. A crank mechanism couples the folding member to the wheels 1 so as to cause oscillation of the member as the wheels rotate. The control member comprises a pivoted surface 7 spring-urged towards position M from position A. In position M, the surface 7 closes the switch of the driving motor, and in position A the switch is opened. The wheels 1 feed the strip at a slightly greater speed than that at which the strip is fed to the device. Starting with the surface 7 in position M with the strip bending outwardly as shown at B, the wheels 1 are driven so that the strip is fed forwardly and folded. Subsequently the surface 7 is moved downwardly due to the higher speed of the wheels 1 until the motor switch is opened whereupon the surface 7 rises again to position M and feeding and folding is resumed, these operations being repeated during the working of the device. In place of the wheels 1, endless toothed chains can be employed, the chains being adjustable laterally in accordance with the width of the strip.
