Abstract

1339937 Cutting apparatus PENTACON DRESDEN KAMERA-UND KINOWERKE VEB 24 Sept 1971 44588/71 Heading B4B A device for cutting photographic materials supplied in the form of a web comprises a pair of feed rollers 4, 5 and a cutting unit 27, 28, 29 driven by separate electric motors Mol, Mo2 respectively, a brake device 18, 19 for acting on the web controlled together with the cutting unit by means of marks on the web adapted to be scanned by photo-electric means Tal, Ta2, the feed rollers being driven continuously and their speed and the duration of the braking being so selected that a loop is formed during braking between the pair of feed rollers and the brake which is shorter than the length of one feed step. The feed roller 4 is driven by the motor Mol via a worm drive 6, 7 and a change gear device 8, 9, 10, 11, the roller 5 being urged by spring pressure against the roller 4. The cutting unit includes an oscillatable cutter 29 having cutting edges adapted to co-operate with fixed cutters 27, 28. The cutter 29 is actuated by the electric motor Mo2 via a crank-and-rod drive 31, 32. The braking device includes a brake pad 18 connected to an electromagnet M and adapted to clamp the web against a fixed member 19. The photo-electric sensing means Tal, Ta2 are mounted on a plate 24 which may be pivoted about a pin 25 by a handle 26 in order to adjust the position of the sensing means. In operation, the motor Mol is energized so as to rotate the feed rollers 4, 5 thereby feeding the web over a guide 17 towards the cutting unit. When a mark (a), Fig. 5 (not shown), is sensed by the photo-electric device Tal the brake is energized to clamp the web and the motor Mo2 energized to actuate the cutter 29 so that it co-operates with the cutter 27 to sever the web. During the cutting cycle while the brake is actuated the feed rollers continue to feed the web so that a loop is formed which causes the web to press against a resilient band 20. Upon completion of the cutting cycle the brake is de-energized thereby allowing the web to jump forward rapidly under the action of the loaded band 20. The web then continues to be fed by the rollers 4, 5 until the next mark is sensed when the operation is repeated. When it is desired to effect a double cut during one cycle, the brake is actuated twice thereby allowing the cutter 29 to co-operate with the lower cutter 28. In a modification, the resilient band may be replaced by a pivoted plate, (39), Fig. 3 (not shown), or a pivoted bar (41), Fig. 4 (not shown).
