Abstract
121,553. Waygood-Otis, Ltd., and Hildred, C. W. March 8, 1918. Cage and platform lifts; safety retaining-mechanism. -Safety suspending-apparatus for an inclined lift comprises a pump actuated by the movement of the lift which normally circulates fluid idly but upon the breakage or undue stretching of a hoisting rope actuates a plunger geared with a rail gripping device. The plunger 1 of the pump is driven from the axle of the lift and normally circulates fluid through the suction pipe 4, delivery pipe 5, and tank 2. A valve 3 controlled by the hoisting ropes 23 normally prevents communication between the pipe 5 and a pipe 6 leading to one or more plungers 7 provided with racks 14 which gear with pinions 15 on a shaft 16 carrying oppositely threaded rail grippers 17, 18. The stem 8 of the valve 3 is pressed upwards by a spring 10 and is pivotally connected to one end of a pivoted lever 9, the other end of which is held down by a trip lever 12 against the upward pressure of a spring 13. The hoisting ropes 23 are secured to the ends of a lever 24 which is pivoted at its centre in a draw-bar 26 provided with a spring 28. When the lever 24 is rocked by the breaking or stretching of one of the ropes 23, it bears against one of the stops 22 on the rod 21 and the longitudinal movement of this. rod removes the trip lever 12 from its seat on the lever 9. The spring 13 then rocks the lever 9 and the valve 3 being opened, fluid passes to the plungers 7 and the rail-gripping device is applied. If both ropes break, the spring 28 pulls the drawbar, 26 into contact with the upper extension of the lever 12. Undue acceleration may be prevented by connecting the main drum at the top of the track through worm gearing to an electric brake and motor.
